I enjoy buying various pieces of engineering equipment and tooling. During my time at University I restored several machinist vices (Record No 21, Paramo No 2 and Parkinson No 9 Model F). For some of these vices this meant saving them from the scrap pile. Each one gave me a better understanding of the pieces and the history of the individual companies.
The restoration of these vices presented many problems along the way. The vices and mechanisms were completely stripped down, cleaned, greased, painted and re-assembled. In some cases the castings had to be ground back to remove weld spatter, handles had to be straightened and sliding faces re-honed.
